0 komentar
The major change on the DC customized Mercedes Benz W222 S Class is the electric blue paint shade it comes in. DC has also added black detailing to the car’s front grille and chrome strip on the bootlid. Basically,DC Design has covered up the chromed areas with a black finish to make the S Class look more classy.

The design house has also added an AMG kit to the W222 S Class. Now, we don’t know whether the AMG kit involves just cosmetic modifications or whether it goes deeper into engine, exhaust, etc. The S500 that DC Design has modified comes with a 4.7 liter BiTurbo petrol engine that is rated to produce 453 Bhp of power and 700 Nm of torque. So, the car is quite powerful as it is and doesn’t need extra work on the engine front.  Until DC Design reveals the price of India’s first customized W222 Mercedes Benz S Class.

Used Car Review Chevrolet Venture 2001 2007

0 komentar
Want a cheap van for the weekend family escapade? Myk Belmonte has one pick that you might love.

2001-2007 Chevrolet Venture

History
Bet you didnt know that Buick is doing well in China than in the States. They started with a Chinese version of the Century and Regal (the latter is known in the Philippines as the Chevrolet Lumina) and success started there. By just adjusting US (or Australian) models to Chinese preferences, you get high sales since you have listened to your market.

The Buick GL8 sold in China is the Pontiac Montana in the other side of the globe. First available to Chinese families in 1999 in both regular and extended versions, the Buick found success in the east rather than the west. Still sold as new under the name GL8 Business Edition despite a new generation model launched in 2010.

It was in 2001 when GM Automobiles Pilipinas sold the GL8 under the Che vrolet Venture badge. This rivaled the Hyundai Starex, newbie Kia Carnival, and paved way for other competitors from Nissan, Toyota, and Chrysler. The early models can seat 10 people due to taxation reasons while 2005 and later ones have capacity of seven bodies. Imports ceased in 2007 due to some unknown reason, and no direct replacement from Chevrolet was seen. Variants included a base model (it was named as the CT in 2005), LT (added in 2003), and the more plusher LT Premium (added in 2005).

Value and Costs
Your weekend car is now affordable, with prices in the range of P160,000-P310,000. With Chevrolets a victim of low resale values, this is one appealing package. That is, if you continue to read the preceding paragraphs.

Since this vehicle is discontinued, parts procurement can be limited to the casa or some American specialist shops. Problems which plagued Ventures are overheating, suspension, noise from the air conditio ning, and radiator issues. Fuel consumption is more scary than a Filipino Horror Movie, so if you want this van, am I scarring you or making up your mind? If you desire this van, head for a later model since earlier ones can be a hit or miss.

Exterior and Interior
Let us not deal with the exterior design more since the main purpose is to haul people, not to steal glances. LT and higher models are distinguished by their two tone color and their roof rails. All Ventures come with dual sliding doors, making access easy.

It is what inside that counts, since youll spend more time inside. For 10 seater models, there are three seat belts in the front (the driver gets a separate chair with adjust) and the third rows and four for the second row occupants. Life has been simplified for 2005 and later units with a 2-2-3 seating layout. With all seats up, the Venture can even accommodate a little at the back, while the third row can be adjusted forward. Legroom and headroom is definitely excellent, even with the seats all up. It uses a stick type shifter which gives more room for the legs while the dash is a button affair from the foglamps to the audio system, time is required to memorize one of them.

Engine
If the USDM Venture uses a 3.4 LA1 V6, the PHDM Venture has a LW9 3,086cc V6 gasoline good for 171hp at 5,200rpm and 345Nm at 4,400rpm. Performance in high speeds has an initial delay but when it kicks in, it is one blast of a drive. Even at highway speeds, the vehicle feels stable.

Driving Impressions
Thankfully, it drives like a car since weaving in traffic is a breeze and parking is cake. Visibility can be a problem especially when the vehicle is full. Overall, youll love this vehicle especially if you are tired driving an AUV or any truck based vehicle.

Verdict
Decid ing to get a Venture is something debatable. You are rewarded with a comfortable ride and more space for people but downsides are in the financial aspect. Ask yourself if you are better with a different van or with a Chevrolet.

The Good:
  • Cushy ride
  • Family friendly
  • Stable at high speeds
The Bad:
  • Coarse and fuel thirsty engine
  • Tight seating with 10 seater version
  • Maintaining can be expensive
The Pick: LT

THE SPECS

2015 BMW 7 Series Review Specifications

0 komentar

2015 BMW 7-Series  Review & Specifications

Six generations in, the BMW 7 Series is still showcasing the talents and technologies of the firm and its engineers, with 13 industry firsts debuting on the model ready to filter down into the rest of the BMW range.

For much of its 28-year history, the 7 Series has sat in the shadow of the Mercedes S-Class (and to a lesser extend the Jaguar XJ and Audi A8), but the firm believes this latest model will see that balance redressed. As its flagship model it’s an important car, and the outcome of this BMW 7 Series revie w is crucial.

More tech, more luxury
Included in the 13 industry-first technologies showcased on the new BMW 7 Series is the firm’s Gesture Control â€" a £160 option â€" which reduces the reliance on physical buttons to control various functions within the cabin.

Sensors near the rear-view mirror detect hand movements from the driver, with a simple rotation of the wrist enough to change the stereo’s volume or a dismissive swipe of the hand able to reject an incoming phonecall. It’ll take a little while to get used to, but once you do it’s strangely satisfying.

Parking this gargantuan car can even be done while you’re stood outside, thanks to the Display key (with built in 2.4-inch screen); stand within four metres and operate the controls, and the 7 Series will drive forward or reverse slowly into your selected space. If you want to stay in the car, then the Surround View suite of cameras can project your 7 Series into the surroundings so you can see exactly where you are manoeuvring.

Ambient Air Fragrance with ionisation allows the climate control to reduce any harmful or irritant particulates from the air inside the car, improving the experience for any allergy sufferers, plus dispersing a fragrance of your choice.

At night BMW’s ‘Laserlights’ take LED technology one step further, with a full-beam reach that doubles previous systems’ with faster reactions and more precise beam pattern. Meanwhile the Welcome Light Carpet will project an ill uminated walkway to the doors when you unlock the vehicle after the sun has gone down.

Touch Command endows rear-seat passengers with their own removable tablet to control various functions inside and outside of the vehicle, and mobile phone charging is handled wirelessly for compatible devices.

Fully leather-lined from the most basic model upwards, the cabin also offers plenty of personalisation through BMW’s Individual programme and separate optional extras. Choose the Individual Design Composition and you’ll notice special exterior paint, wheels, Merino open-pore leather, head-up display, Surround View camera, panoramic glass roof, ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio and rear-seat entertainment with a pair of screens.

Those looking for even better quality audio can choose the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound audio system with 16 speakers and 1,200-watt output, while the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof uses a series of LED patterns to recreate a starlit sky on the move.

Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines
At launch there’s just one diesel and one petrol engine available for the BMW 7 Series - both six-cylinders. The 730d produces 261bhp and 620Nm of torque for a 6.1 second 0-62mph time, while the 740Li manages 321bhp with 450Nm for a 5.6 second 0-62mph sprint.

The diesel is especially clean with a CO2 output of just 124g/km and promised combined economy of 60.1mpg. It’s smooth, refined and perfectly suited to the car’s easy-going nature too. All engines are mated to the firm’s excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Later on, the range will be bolstered by the more powerful 740d and 750i models, which produce 316bhp with 680Nm of torque and 443bhp with 650Nm of torque respectively. Both complete the 0-62mph sprint in around five seconds, but the diesel still manages a claimed 55.4mpg with 134g/km CO2 emissions â€" the 750i returns just 35.3mpg and pumps out 186g/km.

The forthcoming 740e plug-in hybrid redresses that with its 2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor for a combined output of 321bhp, with 500Nm of torque, and a 5.5 second 0â€"62mph time. That’s despite a 49g/km CO2 output and 134.5mpg combined economy figure. It’ll even travel on electric power alone at speeds up to 75mph.

Long-wheelbase and xDrive available
The new 7 Series is longer (by 19mm) than its predecessor, with the longest wheelbase in its class, but if you need even more room for your rear passengers a long-wheelbase model is also available â€"denoted by L in the model title. This increases the distance between the wheels by 140mm, giving rear-seat passengers enough room to properly stretch out.

It’s even more luxurious if the buyer of the car has opted for the Executive Lounge Seating (available from July 2016) that offers two rear chairs with an adjustable backrest angle (up to 42.5 degrees) and a front passenger seat that can slide forward by up to 90mm. There’s a fold-out table and extra storage compartment there too, and occupants can control various functions fro m the firm’s Touch Command removable tablet while enjoying their own entertainment on the rear screens.

For the first time in the UK the BMW 7 Series is available with the firm’s xDrive four-wheel drive system too, which apportions power to the wheels that need it most. Buyers keen on the extra security this system offers can choose from the 730d xDrive, 740d xDrive, 740Ld xDrive and 740Le xDrive.

Read on for the full verdict on every single facet of the BMW 7 Series, on sale now.

Used Car Review Jaguar XF 2008 Current

0 komentar
On the second day of Christmas Myk Belmonte gave to me... two Jaguars. Two pre-owned units for me.

2008-Current Jaguar XF

History
We all know that Jaguar Cars was sold to Tata Motors (a huge conglomerate in India) from Ford Motor Company. Since the Blue Oval wants to focus on its core product - which is, Ford - they had no choice but to sell Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, and let go of some percentage off Mazda.

The last Jaguar under Fords supervision, the XF debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show with customer deliveries commenced in March 2008. Under the codename X250, this sedan was designed to replace the S-Type.

Locally, this vehicle had its local launch in 2008 with three gasoline powerplants available at first; with an update in 2011 saw the arrival of the diesels. Not much to discuss in this paragraph since well deal it more on the preceding portions of this article.

Value and Cost s
Purchasing a brand new Jaguar XF can give you the following: fast depreciation since you are the first owner, a waiting period is possible, and youll be under scrutiny of the BIR - especially if you know the news about it. With a pre-owned unit that can cost you between P3,200,000-P5,200,000, you would get something brand new for less. Best head to Jaguar in either Makati or Global City to check for pre-owned units since they have been checked and inspected.

Maintaining one is no bed of roses since Jaguars are known for their expensive maintenance costs. Just like other luxury sedans, one must check the electronics since the XF has tons of them. As with engines, going with the normally aspirated ones would save you more; supercharged models (available in both V8 gasoline and diesel) can put a drain to your wallet.

Exterior and Interior
Ian Callum is the guy who pushed Jaguars design direction to the modern side, leaving behind the classic angles that is known for. More sharp lines from the front that reaches to the back which now appeals to young accomplished executives. Highlights include a chrome strip in the boot lid and the prominent Jaguar logo up front. Supercharged models gains an "S" badge to know the unit you are buying.

It is an electronic affair inside the XF since the car makes life easier for you. Having a bunch of keys is a thing of the past, a push button to start the car is present. Located in the center console, pushing the button will have the air-con vents open by itself. Another nice amenity is the rotary knob that acts as the shifter for the automatic transmission - whether six or eight speed. Simplicity is the key with a touchscreen monitor for the entertainment functions plus other buttons - that can be a source of driving distraction - located below for the audio and climate. You may adjust the cruise control via buttons mounted in the steering wheel, the same goes with the paddle shifters. Before leaving, material quality is excellent and cabin space is comfortable for four (five is a squeeze due to the center console).

Engine
As with luxury sedans, you get a wide raft of engines that suits your requirements and budget. Start from the basic, which is the AJ30 2,967cc V6 gasoline that carries 238hp at 6,800rpm and 293Nm at 4,100rpm. Graduate to the AJ133 5,000cc V8 in either normally aspirated or supercharged flavors; figures for the normally aspirated are 385hp at 6,500rpm and 515Nm at 3,500rpm while choosing the supercharged version gives you 510hp at 6,000-6,500rpm and 625Nm at 2,500-5,500rpm. Added in 2011 is the Lion 2,993cc V6 diesel both available in normally aspirated or supercharged. Crunching the numbers, the normally aspirated carries 240hp at 4,000rpm and 5,000rpm at 2,000rpm while the supercharged version has 275hp at 4,000rpm and 600Nm at 2,000rpm. Choosing the 3.0 V6 gasoline would reward you with ample powe r inside the city but underpowered at spirited drives. There is the 5.0 V8 with 385hp which carries the vehicles weight well plus it is one smooth operator but it is fuel thirsty. The supercharged version gives you blistering acceleration at the expense of maintenance and fuel costs. Go for the 3.0 V6 diesel in normal flavor that will give you great acceleration while saving you diesel fuel in the process. There is also a supercharged version of this oil burner but for practicality wed stick with the normal ones.

Driving Impressions
Daddy mobile no more, it is one car that will respond to your desires since steering is precise. Despite the 1,800kg mass, handling is controlled even at the sharpest turns. Stopping this heavy sedan is nothing, it will stop in a penny.

Verdict
Long from an old mans ride to the retirement home, Jaguar now has a styling direction that has more sharp angles than ruler inspired lines. The XF is nea rly perfect, almost there. For those who want to get noticed (think Totoy Brown) than speeding up, then a pre-owned unit is the answer.

Used Car Review Subaru Legacy 1996 1999

0 komentar
Myk Belmonte is giving out our second 90s vehicle feature in the form of a wagon, which now is a bargain nowadays.

1996-1999 Subaru Legacy

History
Subaru made a reputation of making quirky vehicles which were equipped with all wheel drive and at the same time, sturdy. They look pale, until the SVX coupe came along which prompted the brand to make some changes in the vehicles design.

The second generation Legacy was available in either sedan (both low and high raised, with the latter called the SUS or Sports Utility Sedan) or wagon (this generation gave birth to the Outback) versions. Sales started in October 7, 1993 in Japan with the rest of the world having it the following year. Do take note that the chassis codes differ by body style: BD for sedans, BG for standard wagons, and BK for flat roof wagon.

April 1996 saw the addition of the Subaru brand by Columbian Motors Corporation and the first model to made available is the BG Legacy. It was the only available vehicle in the regular line-up, with the Impreza WRX being available on an indent order basis. Despite the firm having successfully selling the various Kia, Mazda, and even BMW vehicles, this didnt catch up the buyers attention. It was discontinued in 2000 with the distribution rights handled to GM Automobiles Pilipinas and with Columbians financial woes back then. There was only one variant available, the GL.

Value and Costs
For those interested in the Subaru Legacy, prices for a second hand unit falls between P145,000-P265,000. This is one practical wagon from the 90s, especially its Opel rivals face difficulty in sourcing parts. Do we see a 90s bargain here? Read on.

Despite being an old model, parts can be purchased at Motor Image in Greenhills. Regular maintenance can be done there, since they know even the oldest of Subarus. The boxer engine is bulletproof and the vehicle wo uldnt give up on you if maintenance is done right. The AWD system may consume a little more gas but will give you stability at the worst situation. Paint fading is common, as with other vehicles done in Columbians old plant in Bicutan.

Exterior and Interior
Even though this is a wagon, sporty touches such as the trademark frameless windows (water does not enter, definitely a good thing) are done to brighten up a dull vehicle. But overall, this is something that we would not discuss further.

Plastics that were used are very far of Subarus of today. Oddly, the controls for the air-conditioning is positioned above the radio but nevertheless, changing stations or temperature isnt hard since they are easy to reach. For more flicking fun, the knob for the AWD system is located beside the parking brake. Space for both people and cargo is adequate despite the propeller shaft tunnel passing through the middle portion. The rear bench can be folded to a ccommodate more items that are long in nature.

Engine
Only one engine reached Philippine shores in the form of an EJ20 1,994cc carrying 115hp at 5,600rpm and 170Nm at 4,400rpm. Call it conservative (the 626 has 118hp but the engine is fun to drive) but this one is a hoot to drive, thats if you know how to extract the power to enjoy every moment.

Driving Impressions
The standard AWD, less power from the engine, and a long body makes the vehicle something hard to drive for the newbie. With constant practice, driving one is just sisiw (easy).

Verdict
Want a 90s wagon that is easy to maintain? The Legacy is one great choice. With the added security of AWD, as well as good support for spare parts, owning one is easy.

The Good:
  • Versatile wagon body
  • Tons of room
  • Comfortable
The Bad:
  • Poor interior trim
  • Questionable interior trim
  • AWD not for everyone
The Pick: GL

Proton Wira modifications under RM1K project Part 1

0 komentar
A couple of months back I wrote about "Rejuvenating an old car - repairs on a Proton Wira 1.3 M". Well, I was having a chat with some of my friends, discussing the pros and cons of repairing and modifying old cars over buying new ones.

I feel that Malaysians in general take good care of their cars but once they pass a certain number of years, apart from irregular service, they kind of stop replacing worn out parts, there are dents and scratches everywhere, rust in various parts are left untreated, their headlight turn yellow with age, the bumpers are nearly falling off and the you tend to hit the speed bumps whenever you go over them as the shock absorbers are way past their due date.

The dilemma facing a lot of owners of old cars is that you do not want to repair/ replace the parts as "it is an old car" and you are thinking of upgrading to a newer car. But you continue driving the same car until one day, the bumper falls off or worse, breaks down in the middle of the highway. A friend was telling us that it would cost thousands to repair/replace everything in his old car which set me thinking: How much modifications/ improvements can you do on your car with just RM1000?

I was lucky I had the ideal car for this project - my dads old Proton Wira Aeroback. Based on the Mitsubishi Lancer platform, this car is a favourite among car modification enthusiasts in Malaysia, mainly because of the wide range of accessories and aftermarket parts available and of course the affordability.

The car is still running beautifully without any major issues. As mentioned in my previous post, the timing belt had been changed last year and I recently had the shock absorbers and a few other parts changed. However, it was clear that the car had seen better days. The paint is pealing off on the rear bumper, the Proton logo in the front has also fallen off.

Of course I have to cla rify that all the mods I plan to do are mostly remedial and/or aesthetic. I do not plan to do anything related to performance enhancement or the engine. I also plan to do most of the work myself whenever I can to reduce the cost and keep under the budget.

First of all, I had to think about all the parts which were essential. So I went about replacing the old wipers. I bought Genuine Bosch (BE17+BE20) Proton Wira ECO Wiper Blades for RM54 on Lazada. This is one of the things that we can do ourselves and do not need to go to a workshop for. This is not my first time and I had the new wipers on in a couple of minutes.

Next I sent the car off to painting specialist M. Spray Work in Taman Mayang Jaya and got the rear bumper painted. The big ugly patch on the bumper was really lowering the image of the car. That cost me RM200, which took a big chunk out of my small budget. However, Mr. Tan did a really good job and the bumper looks as good as new.

Before

After

Sometime back I had read an article on car soundproofing kits which helped to reduce vibrations and noise in the car. After a bit of searching online, I found a seller -Fsmotoersport on Lelong.com.my, selling soundproofing kits for Proton Wira cars. It cost me RM40 for the custom made bonnet soundproofing kit and it finally arrived day before yesterday. The pieces were custom cut to fit the spaces on the car bonnet and the experience was like doing a jigsaw pu zzle as I had to figure out which piece went where. There was no need to use glue as the pieces were self adhesive with easy peel away backing and it was all done in less than half an hour. I was quite unsure whether it would work but was quite happy after driving around our neighbourhood. There is a noticeable reduction in the engine noise.
before

After

Of course, I also had to get a new emblem/logo to go on the front grill. The font looks quite plain without the logo. I initially thought of replacing it with the original "old" Proton logo - the one with a star and crescent moon but then while going through Lelong.com.my, found someone selling the new Proton Tiger logo/ emblem. Though it is meant for the Proton Iswara, I think it will fit perfectly on the Wira as well. It cost me RM19.90 and I am waiting for it to arrive.

All together I have now used a to tal of RM313.90 which leaves me with RM686.10 for other improvements.

What should I do next?

CANNONBALLS DEEP THE BEGINNING

0 komentar
Shinya Kimura on his 1915 Indian twin, on a test run before its 4th Cannonball, as seen from the back of our wet plate van, my Sprinter with red safety film on the window for our mobile darkroom.
It was history to be made, and 94 riders grasped the gauntlet; to be the first 100-year old vehicles of any sort to cross the United States.  Cars, planes, bicycles, rollers skates, whatever - the 2016 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Rally, this year called the Race of the Century, would the be the first attempt to my knowledge for any C enturion vehicle to cross the country.  That claim was staked at the starters banquet in the Golden Nugget hotel on September 9th in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during an oppressively hot and muggy late Summer week - 95 degrees and 90% humidity - the hotel having chiseled off its Trump name some years ago during a bankruptcy proceeding.
Trying to get a decent shot of the assembled 94 motorcycles on the Atlantic City boardwalk, just before the 10am start of the Cannonball.
It wasnt the only evidence of Trump, or bankruptcy, w ed encounter on our third trip over backroads America.  Three Cannonballs, this one likely to be my last, and for once totally bikeless, as my partner (with the bike) couldnt take the 3 weeks off this year.   My artistic and life partner Susan, after a crisis huddle, decided our MotoTintype project was too important to abandon, so we chose to follow the Cannonball as photographers, taking as many wet plate photos as we could, and round out the hundreds of images wed already shot on the prior 2 events, in order to make a book of the best images. Susans brother Scott drove my Sprinter to NYC, and thus began another epic road trip.
...and the shot I was able to take, from the opposite direction from the official panorama of the start.
The Motorcycle Cannonball was initiated by Lonnie Isam Jr, as both an homage to the achievement of Erwin Cannonball Bakers cross-country record breaking sprees in the early part of the 20th Century, and a challenge to the many owners of early motorcycles who didnt ride them all that much. Lonnie believed early machines were just as capable of crossing the country today - on paved roads rather than dirt tracks - as they were when new, and the first Cannonball was held in 2010, with a small cadre of riders on pre-1916 machines accepting the challenge.  That first year was notoriously difficult, and an admirably bonding experience.  Nobody had tried such an incredibly long ride - 3500 miles - on such old machinery, and nobody really knew what to expect, or how th e bikes would hold up to riding and average 250 miles/day on a rigorous schedule.
Kurt Klokkenga, one of the motorcycle sweep staff of the Cannonball, who were allowed to help repair machines en route without penalty.  Im sure many stranded riders were grateful of their help!  Love his patina Panhead.
Not surprisingly, the tales of woe and late nights spent making repairs, every single night, made that 2010 event legendary.  Most of the original 45 riders vowed never to do it again, and kept their promise!  So me returned in 2012 though, especially as the rules were relaxed to include bikes up to 1930.  That allowed me to naively enter the 2012 Cannonball with my 1928-framed Velocette Mk4 KTT.  The Mule had been my reliable rally machine for 12 years, taking in 7 week-long Velocette rallies, covering 250-mile days with aplomb.  Id already effectively double the Cannonball mileage on a similar daily schedule, so it seemed a plausible effort.
Beauty among the beasts!  Alyson DeCosa and Buck Carson of Carson Classic Motors was happy to pose o n the 1913 Warwick delivery tricycle ridden by his father Mike.
Readers of my 2012 Cannonball reports on TheVintagent.com know I had terrible problems with two replacement camshafts I installed, the first lasting about 20 miles total, and the second, installed after many hours modification at a machine shop, lasted only a further 1000 miles.  Those were blissful miles over the Rockies, Ill confess, but the truth was, the Cannonball defeated my preparation.  The Mule remains the only overhead-camshaft motorcycle to run the Cannonball, and several H-D riders suggested that a machine which couldnt be fixed with a hammer had no place on a run like the Cannonball.  Perhaps theyre correct.
German engineering!  Thomas Trapp and Paul Jung found the front fender of this 1915 Harley-Davidson too long, and fouling the front wheel at speed, so they bobbed it!  Thomas is Europes largest H-D dealer, from Frankfurt.
In 2014, I partnered with Revival Cycles to ride Bryan Bossiers 1933 Brough Superior 1150, which proved an absolutely remarkable machine, showing its heels daily to every other Cannonball machine, and cruising at a steady 65-70mph, even ridden two-up, with Susan on the back.  Our only competition was the 1936 H-D Knuckleheads squeaking into the pre-1937 rules, but a day-long ride on a Knuck over the 11,000 Independence Pass in Colorado, with its endless hairpin turns, revealed there was no comparison between the pride of American engineering, and a cob bled-up masterpiece of British engineering.  Sorry dudes. (Read my 2014 ride report here)
We had plenty of visitor and day-trippers along for the ride, including Cannonball veteran and publisher Buzz Kanter of American Iron mag.
With no motorbike to concern us this year, Susan and I had an all-Sprinter Cannonball rally, and embraced the experience.  Following the same route as the riders, we were blessed with the endlessly beautiful and fascinating landscape of the United States.  The natural beauty of the East Coa st forests, with their winding hills and hollows, lovely climbs were perfect motorcycle roads, dotted regularly with podunk villages and oddball eateries, brought a mix of awe at Nature and concern at Nurture.   Signs supporting a blustering demagogue were inevitably mixed with Confederate flags in Pennsylvania, a clear repudiation of both the policies and race of our current president, in parts of the country left far behind the technology-based prosperity of my native California.
Our wet plate photo of Round the World Doug Wothkes 1917 Douglas twin, brought along for spares, since it was too new for the Cannonball.
The start of this years rally was hot and oppressive, with daily 95deg temps and 90% humidity.  Jumping in an out of the Sprinter to develop photographs was an experience in hydration management, a subject which became increasingly critical as the days rolled forward, regardless of our ride nurse Vicki Spitfire Sanfelipo handing out electrolite tablets like candy.  Make friends with Gatorade, she said, so we did, and wrung out our sweat-soaked clothing at night (Ill cover our wet plate adventure in a separate post).
Cris Sommer Simmons has ridden Effie, her 1915 Harley-Davidson, on 2 Cannonballs now, and it acquitted itself very well.
September 10th was a short ride of 158 miles through an endless series of New Jersey stoplights. The heat, and the constant stop-start, took a heavy toll on machinery and riders, and by the end of the day in York, Pennsylvania, 23 machines were hors de combat.  Some refused to start in the heat, some broke parts, some seized, and one burned to the ground. John Pfeifer had built an extra-capacity fuel tank for his 1916 Harley-Davidson, and the weight of a full tank pressed down onto the rear cylinders rocker arm (atop the cylinder head on an F-head motor).  It only took 80 miles or so for the rocker to wear through the metal, fuel to spill onto the magneto, and a great ball of flame to erupt.  John watched his machine burn for 20 minutes before a fire truck arrived with a decent extinguisher.  The first day was the worst day overall, culling the field quickly, and serving notice this wasnt going to be an easy run.
Our wet plate of Brent Hansen and his 1913 Shaw motor bicycle, with a very long road before him.
On a bright note, Susan and I had a terrific meal at the Left Bank in York, the first of 3 excellent meals on our 17-day trip.  We tried our hardest to eat well, searching daily for the best restaurant in X, and finding lists online which invariably included chains li ke Jack in the Box. Its not difficult to draw conclusions about rural American culinary habits from this, and youd be correct - America grows food for the world, but eats poorly in the very regions that food is grown.  But wed discovered that a couple of times already, and brought a sufficient stock of coffee and wine from home!
A visit from the locals!  Atlantic city crew - the neighborhood 12 OClock Boys, although they sheepishly admitted they were 1 or 2 OClockers in reality, as a fully vertical wheelie is hard!
Rural Pennsylvania is a lovely place to ride through.  We stopped in Collinsville, PA, for some ice cream
Day 1: carnage.  The cylinder head on Dave Volneks 1915 Indian blew out, but he had spares, and the bike was back on the road the next day.
Part of a strong German contingent, Andreas Kaindl rode his 1915 Henderson single-speeder, which he purchased from the Hockenheim Museum, and added a convincing faux-patina paint job.  This was Andys 3rd Cannonball.
Frank Westfall on his 1912 Henderson, and Buck Carson on his 1914 BSA single belt-driver.
A gentlemans mount!  Kevin Waters has Beamed across America twice now, having ridden a 33 Sunbeam Model 9 the full distance in 2014.  His 1915 Sunbeam single was a lovely, and very early, example of the marque.
Trouble begins before the beginning! The 1913 Douglas of Steve Alexander gets a flat in the first 6 miles, at the staging area...
Doug Feinsod, a Cannonball veteran, and one of the Thor Losers, a 5-rider team of rare Thor v-twins
Many kind words and thoughts were directed to our friend Bill Buckingham, who was tragically killed 2 weeks before the Cannonball.  His usual #40 number plate was carried by a string of other riders, and 40 stickers adorned many bikes.  Godspeed, Bill
