As most people know, thereâs more to driving than just the feelâ¦the excitementâ¦the stop lights. Whether kids are in the picture or not, safety is a key factor when choosing a new vehicle, and with all the latest technology available, the choice might seem like a tall task. Luckily, Acura made it easy with the 2017 MDX, which now offers the automakerâs AcuraWatch⢠Safety Suite as a standard feature across all trim lines.
AcuraWatch⢠is a host of sensing technologies that continuously gather info, and based on the results, offer up warnings and in some cases will take matters into its own proverbial hands. The features found in the AcuraWatch⢠System include:
Collision Mitigation S ystem
Whether itâs a quick look in the backseat, or a glance to see whoâs calling - our eyes canât be on the road 100-percent of the timeâ¦even though in an ideal world, they should be. This is where the Collision Mitigation System comes into play. If the system indicates trouble ahead, a visual alert will be activated, and if the driver doesnât react quick enough, it will apply the brakes.
Adaptive Cruise Control
When traveling longer distances on the expressway, itâs nice to keep a speed without constantly staying on the gas pedal. Adaptive Cruise Control lets you not only set a desired speed, but it will adjust it based on a car or traffic ahead - slowing down or accelerating depending on the situation.
Lane Keeping Assist
In keeping with the distraction theme, we sometimes lose track of the road and can allow the vehicle to wander a b it, sometimes creeping into the next lane. Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera right above the rearview mirror to detect the center of the lane. Once the MDX begins to drift one way or the other, the system will gently guide the vehicle back to itâs rightful place. Switching lanes is no problem with the proper use of the turn signal.
Road Departure Mitigation
While the Lane Keeping Assist system helps from unknowingly merging into another lane, Road Departure Mitigation takes it one step further. The System can and will detect objects such as trees and parked cars, which would indicate the car is veering off the road. In this case, the system would issue a warning message, and if the need presents itself, it would utilize the active steering function (found in the Lane Keeping Assist system) and apply brakes, if necessary.
The 2017 Acura MDX offers some of the most advanced safety features around, which makes it one of the safest vehicles to take on the road. In addition to the AcuraWatch⢠Safety Suite, the MDX is constructed with the next-gen Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACEâ¢) body structure, which utilizes structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly.
